2002 Recipient:
Dr. Edward E. Penhoet
Edward E. Penhoet is co-founder of Chiron, one
of the world's leading biotechnology companies. In 1992, Dr.
Penhoet shared with his co-founder, Dr. William Rutter, the
Northern California Entrepreneur of the Year Award presented
by Ernst & Young and Inc Magazine. He presently serves
as Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of
California, Berkeley. He is also a partner in the venture
capital firm, Alta Partners, and will join the Gordon and
Betty Moore Foundation later this year as director of its
higher education and science programs.
Dr. Penhoet is immediate past chairman of the
California Health Care Institute, and Chairman of the Chabot
Space & Science Center and he Bay Area BioScience Center.
He sits on multiple Boards of Directors, including the Oakland
Museum Foundation and UC System Biotech Advisory Committee.
The award was inaugurated in 1998.
