Lester Center Fellows

2000 Fellow

Hubbard C. Howe

As a principal of Clayton, Dubilier and Rice, a private leveraged buy-out investment firm in NewYork, Mr. Howe had served as CEO or a board member of many financially troubled companies that he “turned around” and sold for profit. In all, he worked with more than sixty companies during his career, ranging from Remington Arms to a grocery store chain, and living in hotel rooms much of the time. It was, he said, an enormously stressful job, as he sought to make ethical decisions regarding the often conflicting interests of workers, shareholders, and the public.

Hubbard Howe received his degree from University of California, Berkeley—a B.S. in business administration.
