Investor, Life Science Angels
Darren Cooke is an investor with Life Science Angels. He sits on the deal screening committees of LSA, where he hears 120 live pitches a year and leads IP diligence on potential investments. LSA invests in 4-6 seed-stage biotech, medical device, digital health, and therapeutic companies per year, and to date has funded about 60 companies with some great results. Before becoming a full-time investor, Darren led the IP legal team for the Life Science Group of Bio-Rad Laboratories (NYSE:BIO). In his ten years at Bio-Rad, he led IP diligence and integration on dozens of deals, including Quantalife (digital PCR), GnuBIO (droplet-based sequencing), and Propel (cell sorter). He and his team also evaluated every new Bio-Rad invention, filed 400 new patent applications, had 250 US patents issue, and cleared 50+ new products for FTO. Before Bio-Rad, Darren was a patent litigator with Covington & Burling, and before law school, a mechanical engineer developing surgical tools in the Dept. of Otolaryngology at UCSF. Darren has a JD from Columbia Law School, MS in mechanical engineering, UC Berkeley, and BS in mechanical engineering, Cal Poly.
